I hiked a lot in the Sierra Mountains in California over many years and covered many trails. I never went into the mountains if I was on my period. I didn’t carry or eat fresh meat. What food was packed in was put in bags strung on branches high above in large trees. I don’t know the facts here, but you never want to get between a mother animal and her offspring. When I hiked in Alaska, I saw dozens and dozens of hikers covered with blood from their encounters with bears. The camping spots for hikers in Alaska were surrounded by 18 foot high metal chain fenced enclosures.
I had bears poke their noses into my tent twice. Once in Minnesota and again in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains. I always sleep with my rifle, when I’m camping. Both times I was able to scare the bears away by yelling. Luckily, I didn’t have to shoot at them.
