I’m a zookeeper, what I will say about the whole kerfuffle about captivity is that there actually isn’t a black/white answer on the subject. Neither human care nor natural habitat is automatically better, just different. Each has its own positives and negatives. Every species is different, and every individual animal is different. I will die on the hill that some animals are almost certainly happier in a nice zoo habitat than in the wild. Likewise, some animals don’t do well with the drawbacks of human care and would be better off in their natural habitat. Good zoos are always working to improve things for their residents. Unfortunately there are a lot of well-meaning people who see a video clip or a picture and assume they know all about that animal ‘s life and emotions, evidence be damned.
